Luanda - The Axi-Luanda Association defended on Wednesday, in Luanda, the need for young people to study the trajectory of the former President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos, in order to perpetuate his legacy at national and international level.

The association's position was expressed by its chairman, Fernando de Matos Mota, at the end of a Eucharistic celebration, held at the Cathedral of the Catholic Church, in memory of José Eduardo dos Santos, who would have turned 80 years on August 28th.

Speaking to the press, Fernando Mota defended the promotion of the legacy of the former president, having asked young people to study his life and work, to understand the dimension of José Eduardo dos Santos.

The Eucharistic celebration in memory of José Eduardo dos Santos, who for 38 years was President of Angola and the MPLA party, was an initiative of the Axi-Luanda Association.

On the occasion, Canon Apolónio Graciano recalled the achievements of the former Head of State. “The mass served to remember his memory, which should not be allowed to pass without a tribute.”

According to the religious, everyone must live on the basis of love and service, taking into account that “those who serve must reveal love”.

For him, remembering the figure of José Eduardo dos Santos is remembering someone who did a lot for the country, a life of dedication for Angola over the years.

Politician and former governor, Higino Carneiro, agrees and appealed to the spirit of love for others.

Born on August 28, 1942, in Luanda, José Eduardo dos Santos became president in September 1979, following the death of the 1st President of Angola, António Agostinho Neto.

He served as President of the Republic from September 21, 1979 until September 26, 2017, when he was succeeded by the current Head of State, João Lourenço.

He passed away in Barcelona (Spain) from illness, on July 8, 2022, at the age of 78.
