Cuito - Angola has withdrawn from participating in the under-23 African Nations Men's Wheelchair Basketball Championship, which is scheduled to take place in 2025, in Egypt, the Angolan Paralympic Committee (CPA) informed on Tuesday in Bié Province.
The secretary-general of the CPA, António da Luz, revealed the decision to ANGOP, when speaking on the situation regarding Angola's debut in the competition, the intention of which had been announced in June this year.
According to the official, Angola's withdrawal is due to the lack of athletes in the category who are not sufficiently prepared, also due to the lack of internal competitions in the country that could contribute to their professional development.
He reported that From the survey, the country does not have athletes who are sufficiently prepared in this category to represent Angola as a national team, so, at this moment, it is not feasible to participate because they may not perform well.
“We were about to participate in the 2025 African under-23 championship, but we understand that it is not time yet, because we have other challenges. We will prepare the two senior men’s and women’s teams for the 2026 African Championships”, he highlighted.
In the meantime, António da Luz assured that the CPA will continue to lay the under-23 foundations to ensure successful participation in African competitions.
As for the coach hired for this purpose, Basil Kululundila, the secretary-general of the CPA informed that he will work with the senior men's team.
“As an Angolan who is working in Switzerland and from what we know of his ranking, we are interested, thus we will create conditions so that he can work with us”, he highlighted.
