Luanda - President João Lourenço on Tuesday assessed the construction work of the road giving access to Luanda’s newly inaugurated Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN) during a field trip to that perimeter.
The Head of State received explanations on the progress of the work that, once completed, will connect the two roads to the AIAAN, passing through the centrality of Zango 5 and ending in the centre of the capital city.
The work, which is being carried out by the Angolan construction company Omatapalo, is currently underway with the concreting of the hydraulic passage, asphalting and the sewage system, and is scheduled to end in June 2025.
Earlier, President João Lourenço, accompanied by members of the government, travelled by train along the stretch linking Bungo railway station to António Agostinho Neto International Airport to check, among other things, the level of completion of the railway fencing and the implementation of the communication and signaling system.
The president also assessed the cleaning, removal of interferences and building of crossways at Luanda Railway's technical and operational transport capacity on the Bungo-Baia-AIAAN section.
Agostinho Neto International Airport was inaugurated in November 2023 and will begin operating with domestic flights from November 10, while international flights will start in March 2025.
AIAAN is around 40 kilometers from Luanda city centre, which represents a milestone for aviation in Angola.
With a projected capacity for 15 million passengers and 130,000 tons of cargo a year, it has two runways capable of accommodating large aircraft and is currently awaiting international certification to operate long-haul flights.
The Angolan government has said it intends to make the country one of the most important hubs for Africa, facilitating the transit of goods and passengers. AFL/QCB/VIC/DAN/AMP
