Luanda - The Embassy of the United States of America (USA) in Angola is promoting from the 4th to the 8th of this month, in Luanda Province, a series of lectures and sporting activities to promote and spread basketball in communities.
To this end, two personalities from the USA are in the country, namely Sheryl Swoopes and Malcolm Lemmons, who will be promoting the said sporting activities and also lecturing on topics about the transformative role of sports in communities, mainly at grassroots levels, among others.
Called "The pass to the Bright Future", the event aims to reinforce the strengthening of sporting, cultural and diplomatic relations between Angola and the USA.
It also aims to promote social inclusion, youth development and health awareness through sport, highlighting the transformative role of basketball in communities.
In his speech, the CEO of Africell, Kory Webster, said he was proud to be able to help Angolan children learn to play basketball better at national and international level, and could even reach the National Basketball Association (NBA).
He said that teaching them discipline, as well as moral values, will be of great help and will lead them to triumph for the rest of their lives.
In turn, the former American basketball player, Sheryl Swoopes, was pleased to be teaching children how to build and strengthen bonds of friendship between the two countries.
Three-time Women's National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player (WNBA MVP) and elected one of the league's 15 best players of all time in the "WNBA All-Star Game" in 2011, she said that Africa has enormous potential and that this is reflected in those who play in the WNBA.
Today, 50 young people from different clubs, 10 coaches and four clinics participated in the event.
In total, the program foresees the presentation of five “workshops”, highlighting “sport”, “nutrition” and “entrepreneurship”.
