Luanda - The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, returned to the country this Thursday from New York, in the United States of America, where he attended the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Upon his arrival at 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, in Luanda, the Angolan statesman was welcomed back by the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, and assistants to the Holder of Executive Power, among other personalities.
Before the General Debate of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Angolan President participated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit, where he spoke as the SADC's acting chairman.
On the occasion, João Lourenço stated that the Covid-19 pandemic demonstrated the importance and strength of solidarity between nations, to face and resolve major global problems.
Likewise, he defended the preservation of the environment through the implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the issue of biodiversity.
João Lourenço also met with his counterparts from Estonia, Alar Karis, and from the Comoros, Azali Assoumani, also president of the African Union, with the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Institute for Global Change, Tony Blair.
He met with the executive directors of the United States Internationalization Finance Corporation, Scott Natha, and Rio Tinto, Jacob Stausholm, as well as the administrator of the United States Agency for International Development, Samantha Power.
On the last day of his stay in New York, João Lourenço met with his Zimbabwean counterpart, Emmerson Mnagawua, the UN secretary general, António Guterres, and the director of Siemmens for Africa, Isabel Cristina Tomás.
He also chaired the meeting of the Troika of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), composed of Angola (president of the organization), Kenya (former president) and Suriname (upcoming president).
The President of the Republic arrived in New York City last Saturday, after having participated in the 77+China Summit in Havana, Cuba.
