Cuanza-Norte – President João Lourenço learnt on Wednesday about the socio-economic situation of the Cuanza Norte province, as part of his 48-hour working visit to the region.
During the meeting, the local governor João Diogo Gaspar, presented the general picture in the areas of energy, health, higher education, health, housing, youth and sport, transport, fisheries, industry, culture, and other areas of social interest
Describing the panorama of the province, João Gaspar introduced the social concerns and difficulties of the ten municipalities that will become 17 with the implementation of the new Political-Administrative Division next year.
The governor said the province has an estimated population of 586,000 inhabitants, and that the general population and housing census, which is currently underway, could show another “demographic picture of the province”.
As regards to water, the governor defended the need to build more water supply systems, which has been of great concern to the local population, underlining that of the province's 586,000 inhabitants, only 93,000 consume drinking water, which corresponds to 16% of the population.
In the area of energy, the governor said that at the moment all the municipal seats and some communes are electrified, and that it is expected that by 2027 the electrification rate in the province could reach 75%.
On Tuesday, as part of his working day, João Lourenço inaugurated the General Hospital of Cuanza-Norte, called Mário Pinto de Andrade.
The hospital provides high quality health services to the population and has specialties in surgery, physical rehabilitation, neonatology, emergency, intensive care and others.
On the same day, the Head of State checked the progress of the new water supply project in Ndalatando.
João Lourenço also visited the local agricultural products fair, which displayed mainly beans, tomatoes, corn, onions, cassava, carrots, eggplants, pumpkins and pineapples.
