Luanda - The Cabinet Council (CM) on Friday discussed the draft Presidential Decree approving the Government’s Electro mobility Strategy, which defines the rules for the acquisition, use, maintenance and charging of electric vehicles.

This was analyzed during the 8th session of the CM, chaired by the country’s President João Lourenço, which aims to boost the mass acquisition of electric vehicles to replace conventional ones, thereby promoting environmental protection and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

The strategy complies with the international commitments to which Angola is a party, related to preserving the environment and promoting sustainable mobility.

Among the conditions provided by the presidential decree, it encourages the purchase of electric vehicles as well as the creation of rules to enable the existence of a national network of electric vehicle battery charging points.

It also includes measures to allow users of electric vehicles to access the charging points integrated into the electric mobility network, regardless of the operator with whom they intend to contract, and the obligation for certain economic operators to install charging points accessible to users of these services.

The government said it expects that the introduction of electric vehicles in the country is the bridge to a paradigm shift in the energy sector, in general, and renewable energy, in particular, which contributes positively to reducing public spending, with a direct impact on citizens' quality of life.

It adds that in addition to increasing production and distribution of electricity and reducing the cost of oil by-products import, it will allow revenue to be allocated to other public interest purposes.

The measure is also expected to boost the emergence of activities related to electro mobility, such as the assembly of electric vehicles and their components, based on tax incentives and benefits, with the consequent creation of jobs.ART/AMP
