Angola gets the quality of honey right for export Luanda – Angola is due to start, soon, the process of exporting organic honey to the European Union (EU) market, within the framework of the “Train For Trade II” programme, ANGOP learned on Tuesday in Luanda from an official source.
According to Johanna Silvander, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), manager, Angolan producers and exporters have been getting a set of tools on quality infrastructure based on sanitary conditions throughout the production process and levels of demand of international standards in Europe, since 2018.
“Based on these facts, Angola will soon start exporting honey to Europe”, he said while speaking on the side-line of the joint training workshop between UNCTAD and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, under the theme “National Quality Infrastructure for the Agricultural food Sector - with a focus on fishing, tropical fruits and coffee.
“At the beginning of the program, in 2018, we carried out a survey that identified Angolan products with potential for export, where several products were registered, including honey, fish and its derivatives, tropical fruits and salt”, he stressed.
According to Johanna Silvander, the Training For Trade II program has seven components, namely trade policies, trade facilitation, identification of green sectors, creative industries, investment, entrepreneurship and transport.
The official said that this workshop takes place within the framework of the green sectors component, where UNCTAD supports the value chain of Angolan products for export.
Johanna Silvander added that the process of creating a quality system could take about 10 years to set up and that, at this point, the program was evaluating the quality structure of Angolan products, as the important thing was to determine the gaps and how UNCTAD can support.
The joint training workshop UNCTAD and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce is taking place over three days (9, 10 and 11) with the aim of discussing the role of quality national infrastructures.
It will also present tools to demonstrate how products and services meet the requirements specified by regulators and the domestic market.
The forum will continue to present quality standards to facilitate access to international markets, assess gaps and limitations in the current Quality Infrastructures in Angola and recommend measures and share information regarding international experience.
