Baku - The Vice-President of Angola, Esperança da Costa, discussed on Wednesday in Baku, Azerbaijan, the possibility of a partnership in the areas of energy transition and decarburization of the oil and gas sector with the multinational EQUINOR.

The conversation took place during an audience Esperança da Costa had with the Norwegian company's executive vice-president for international exploration and production, Philippe Mathieu, who said there are already bases for the partnership to be consolidated.

Speaking to the press at the end of the meeting, the Vice-President said Angola and Norway have a memo signed between EQUINOR and the state oil company Sonangol, precisely in the area of decarburization of the oil and gas sector.

Esperança da Costa said that, at the moment, they are analyzing the experiences achieved in Norway with regard to the electrification of oil platforms, and will then take them to Angola.

Equinor is a Norwegian state-owned multinational operating in the energy sector, with its headquarters in Stavanger.

Also on Wednesday, the vice-president of Angola analyzed, with the president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Álvaro Lario, various projects implemented by the company in Angola, especially in the agriculture and fisheries sectors.

The official did not make any statements to the press after the meeting, but ANGOP has learned that the parties considered the level of implementation of the projects to be “positive”, despite some constraints on the ground.

Some of the setbacks are caused mainly by climate change, with emphasis on the drought in southern Angola, which has proved to be a real problem.

ANGOP learned from the Angolan delegation taking part in COP29 that the country's authorities have pledged to work to eliminate or reduce the effects of the constraints seen so far.

At the moment, IFAD is implementing projects for the 2020-2025 phases, it has requested the Angolan authorities to increase co-financing for the projects, and is studying areas for new investments from 2025 onwards.

Other bilateral meetings between the Vice-President of the Republic and entities linked to the energy sector and the fight against climate change are also scheduled for Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Esperança da Costa took part in the COP29 High Level Summit, where she gave a speech focused on increasing funding for the carbon market.

In her speech, the Vice-President of the Republic said Angola, like other countries in the African region, has been facing various challenges generated by the significant impacts of climate change.

In Baku, Esperança da Costa is leading a high-level Angolan delegation taking part in COP29, representing the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

COP-29, which opened on November 11, runs until the 22 with the participation of several Presidents and Heads of Government. FMA/ART/AMP
