Namacunde – The new operating model of the Santa Clara border post, which has been operating 24 hours a day since last Friday (14), in the province of Cunene, will increase revenue collection from 100 to 120 million kwanzas/month, according to the local customs delegation.

Speaking to ANGOP on Monday, the administrator of the General Tax Administration (AGT), Nerethz Tati, said that with the extension of the opening hours of this border post, which connects Angola and Namibia, it is expected to have more revenue, at a time when the movement of goods is more frequent.

He also added that the initiative will also discourage citizens from using clandestine routes to cross the border of the two countries.

He stressed that at the level of the 6th Tax Region, which brings together the provinces of Cunene and Cuando Cubango, there are more outbreaks of crimes aimed at fuel smuggling, an illicit practice that is more frequent in the Northern Region of the country.

Faced with this scenario, he recalled that the Provincial Government of Cunene has developed an operation that involves several bodies that act at the level of fuel pumps and other points, to supervise commercial activity.

He said that the objective is to discourage the practice of fuel smuggling and the trafficking of goods, which in a way harms the growth of the country's economy.

The Santa Clara border is considered one of the points with the highest volume of land trade, with emphasis on food, clothing, animal feed, telecommunications material and equipment for the mining sector.

In 2023, the 6th Tax Region collected a total of 40 billion 609 million 307 thousand and 238 kwanzas, with an increase of 41 percent compared to the previous period.

Currently, the customs delegation controls 17,298 taxpayers, of which 9,342 in Cunene and 7,956 in Cuando Cubango.

Cunene shares a 460-kilometre border with the Republic of Namibia, of which 340 are land and 120 are river. PEM/IT/QCB/DOJ
