Luanda – Former goalkeeper for 1.º de Agosto and the National Team, Napoleão Alfredo Brandão, died Friday, victim of a prolonged illness, according to a note published on the official Facebook page of the “military” club. Napoleão Brandão left the world of the living at the age of 72, much of which was dedicated to sports, particularly football.
A family source told ANGOP that the former player suffered from diabetes, which was the cause of his physical decline. Considered one of the best goalkeepers of all time in Angola, Napoleão was a key player in building the mystique of 1.º de Agosto.
The highlight of his career was his participation in several national teams in the 1970s and 1980s. The goalkeeper took part in the first historic match between Angola and Cuba, played on 1 June 1977.
The national team won 1-0. After retiring as an athlete, he joined the coaching staff of the main team, where he worked as a goalkeeper coach, contributing to the development of new talents.
Up until the date of his death, Napoleão lived at Zango III area, Icolo e Bengo Province. MC/TED/jmc
