Luanda - The Provincial Coordination of the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Program maintains as a priority this year, the promotion of awareness campaigns on maternal and child health in Luanda.
Speaking to ANGOP on Monday on the subject, its coordinator, Sebastião Kinguati André, reaffirmed the importance of maternal and neonatal health, as a global and local priority for Luanda province.
Despite the progress, André admitted, the figures are still worrying considering that in 2023 ‘the neonatal mortality rate in Angola was 25.2 per 1000 live births, while infant mortality reached 49.6 per 1000 live births’.
According to Sebastião Kinguati André, these indicators reflect the urgent need to strengthen care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, guaranteeing access to humanized, effective and evidence-based health services.
He explained that the Provincial Health Office is investing in the creation of partnerships with NGOs and local leaders, with the aim of expanding activities in the urban and rural areas of the province, as well as offering free consultations, distributing educational materials and strengthening maternal and child epidemiological surveillance.
