Saurimo - At least 21 people died of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) during the first three months of this year in Lunda-Sul province, which recorded a reduction of 15 cases of death from the disease, the local health department director, Viegas de Almeida, said on Friday.
Speaking to ANGOP, the health official said that during this period, 620 people (pregnant women, adolescents and adults) were diagnosed with (HIV), 196 fewer cases than in the first quarter of 2024, and that the decrease in deaths in the province is due to families joining programs to combat the disease.
Viegas de Almeida said that in order to maintain the same level, the health authorities will continue to work on primary and secondary prevention, especially in the areas with the highest population concentration and in the communities.
He said that raising awareness among families about the need to avoid stigmatizing those who are infected is one of the measures aimed at slowing down the negative impact of this disease, pointing out that condoms and information leaflets have been distributed describing how the disease is transmitted and how to prevent it.
