Luanda - Angola's ambassador to Russia, Augusto da Silva Cunha, Tuesday in St Petersburg emphasised the role of the light industry in economies and in contributing to the national identity of states.

The diplomat was speaking at the 3rd Commonwealth of Fashion International Forum, organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the member countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), according to a note from Angola's diplomatic mission in that European country.

According  to Augusto Cunha, light industry must guarantee the national identity of states through its products and services, bearing in mind that it is generally less capital-intensive than heavy industry and more consumer-orientated than business-orientated.

He also stressed the need for this industry to guarantee the internationalisation of cultural traits and values, as well as the icons and signs that sustain each member of the community and partners.

The forum, which is due to close today, emphasises the importance of light industry in the economies of the CIS countries, taking into account the fashion industry and current geopolitical, economic and socio-cultural conditions.

The event also focuses on development prospects, global changes, strengthening international co-operation, issues of supplying raw materials, training staff, improving technologies and promoting local brands, a segment in which Angola has the presence of fashion designer Nadir Tati. VC/DAN/DOJ
