Luanda – Angola´s Foreign minister, Téte António, chaired the first meeting of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) on Monday, as the chairman of this body.

In a press release ANGOP had access to, the ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) informed that the meeting was held virtually, from the headquarters of the African Union, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The note states that the meeting's central focus was to address the institutional crisis triggered by the failure to select candidates for Commissioners submitted by the Central African Region.

The Angolan government official focused his initial remarks on the need to find an urgent, transparent and inclusive solution with the aim of ensuring unity and respect for the fundamental principles of the organization.

The statement points out that after the formal adoption of the five-point agenda, the members of the council body discussed the election and appointment of two Commissioners to the African Union Commission (AUC), a position currently pending, and addressed the timetable, the election mechanism and the candidates eligible for the same competition.

The participants also called for the preservation of the replacement of the Panel of Eminent Figures, a body whose integrity has been widely recognized within the African Union.
