Luanda - The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) unanimously elected this Monday Haitham Al-Ghais, as the new Secretary-General of the institution for the next three years.
According to the OPEC communiqué, the election was held during this year 1st Extraordinary Meeting of the OPEC Conference, in a video-conference format, from the city of Vienna, Australia, led by its president, the Congolese Bruno Jean-Richard Itoua.
The new OPEC's SG, Haitham Al-Ghais, is from Kuwait and begins his duties on August 1, 2022, replacing the Nigerian Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, who was in the post for 6 years (two terms of office).
Haitham Al-Ghais Al-Ghais is a veteran of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), a state-owned conglomerate of which he was director of the Beijing (China) and London (UK) offices. He was also head of the organisation at the Kuwait level for the years between 2017 to 2021.
OPEC, with its headquarters in Vienna, is an intergovernmental organisation founded on 15 September 1960 and made up of 14 countries.
The members of this organisation account for 44% of global oil production and 81.5% of the world's proven oil reserves, giving it a major influence on global oil prices.
