Bibala -The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry António Assis on Tuesday urged Angolan farmers in southern Namibe province to invest in cropping sorghums, which is widely consumed in southern provinces of the country.
Speaking at a meeting with local peasants, the minister underscored the province's fertile climate for growing sorghums in large quantities, hence the reason for peasants to invest in cropping this cereal to obtain more income.
The minister spoke of the need to promote mutual aid between farmers by diversifying agricultural plantations so that all regions could be self-sufficient in food.
"Namibe has good conditions for planting cereals that are widely consumed in Cunene, their production will help not only in the diet of these neighboring peoples, but also in improving the quality of life of their families," the minister said.
Farmers of the Muhongo cooperative, with ten hectares of fertile land located 53 kilometers away from Namibe province, produce cereals (maize), vegetables (tomatoes, onions, cabbage, peppers, carrots, cassava leaves), tubers and fruit such as watermelon, melon, papaya and mango. FA/AC/TED/AMP
