Luanda – The Presiding Judge of the Constitutional Court, Laurinda Cardoso, on Thursday in Luanda declared the end of the electoral cycle that led to the general elections of 24 August.
Laurinda Cardoso was speaking at the inauguration of the re-elected President of the Republic, Joao Lourenço, and the Vice President of the Republic, Esperança Da Costa.
According to the judge, this Thursday inauguration closes another normal cycle of the democratic legitimacy renewal of the highest constitutional post to represent the people for the next five years (2023-2027).
She recalled that all competition in society requires rules and their respective limits, which must be accepted and respected by all in several stages.
The electoral competition is over, and due to that, now “is the time to draw the consequences of the result”, said Laurinda Cardoso, stressing that President Lourenço was sworn in to represent all Angolans without exception.
The TC Presiding Judge added that the Head of State is the real representative and defender of Angola´s noblest interests, regardless of each person´s legitimate party-political preferences.
In the judge´s view, no position demands greater responsibility in conducting national unity than that of the President of the Republic.
For this second term in office, Laurinda Cardoso invited President João Lourenço to show “nothing less than the greatest commitment towards national unity”.
Laurinda Cardoso also reminded the re-elected President that fundamental rights and freedoms, constitutionally enshrined, as well as human rights, in general, constitute a natural limit to any existing power in the State.
According to the magistrate, the people, as the original holder of sovereignty and the power granted today, expect that the president should never allow the mere rule of force to prevail over the rule of justice.
For the judge, this concept should be much broader, also including social justice or the full achievement of the Angolan as a social being.
Laurinda Cardoso, reiterates that Angola cannot be postponed and must not remain a mere dream.
Due to that, she defended that it is urgent that the country should be a pleasurable reality, even for the most humble Angolans.
Therefore, the Presiding Judge of the Constitutional Court encouraged the Head of State João Lourenço to keep on the structural reforms in several sectors and domains of the country´s life, aiming for the general well-being and the creation of better conditions for the next generations.
