Luanda - The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, on Tuesday in Geneva, stressed the Angolan State's commitment to combine synergies with the specialized agencies of the United Nations (UN) to mitigate the problem of refugees and displaced people in the world.
Esmeralda Mendonça made this commitment during her speech at the General Debate of the 74th Session of the Executive Council (ExCom) of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), where she shared the agency's concern regarding the situation of refugees in the world, which has reached an unprecedented number last year.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the head of the Angolan delegation also drew the attention of the members of the UNHCR Executive Board to the need to put an end to the selective solidarity that has been observed, motivating the persistence of prolonged cases, but which could have already been overcome.
The Secretary of State also called on the ExCom-UNHCR member states and other actors to combine efforts to mobilize rapid and active responses to the growing number of displaced people and the resurgence of conflicts in various geo-political regions of the world.
Esmeralda Mendonça announced the implementation, in the coming days, of a non-directed contribution, for 2023 and 2024, in favour of the various programs carried out by UNHCR.
She also said that Member States need to continue to work towards a more supportive world and a sustainable social inclusion model for all people who are refugees and who hope to one day be able to enjoy a shelter, without any kind of threat.
On the other hand, Secretary of State noted with interest the process of reforms undertaken by the UNHCR management, including risk management, and called on the organization to take into account all points of view, within the framework of deliberations regarding the budgetary and financial deficit it is facing.
