Mbanza Kongo - From January to June this year, at least 2,532 Angolan and foreign tourists visited the Historic Center of Mbanza Kongo, in Zaire province, which was elevated to the category of World Heritage Site on July 8, 2017.
Speaking to ANGOP on Thursday, the head of the Kongo Kings Museum, Kediamosiko Toko, said that compared to the same period in 2023, there has been an increase of 606 tourists.
He specified that among the visitors, 2,377 were nationals and 155 expatriates, from the DRC, Portugal, Belgium, the United States of America, France and Brazil.
Toko added that since its elevation to World Heritage status, the Historic Center of Mbanza Kongo has aroused the interest of many national and foreign tourists to get to know the historical past of the capital of the former Kingdom of Kongo.
He cited the Museum of the Kings of Kongo, the Cemetery of the Kings of Kongo, Kulumbimbi, Tady Dya Bukikua, the secular tree (Yala Nkuwu) and the tomb of Dona Mpolo (mother of one of the kings buried alive for disobeying the laws of the court), as the main historical sites and monuments most visited.
The Historic Center of Mbanza Kongo celebrates its seventh anniversary on July 8, since it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. JL/TED/AMP
