Luanda - The network of farmers' field schools in Luanda province will be expanded to four this year, with the implementation of two in the localities of Icolo and Bengo and Quiçama, with a view to diversifying and making greater use of agricultural production in the district.

The plan on the creation of more spaces for the improvement of techniques was advanced by the provincial director of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, João Pedro, in an interview with ANGOP about the activity of the sector in recent times in the country's capital.

According to the official, the idea is to invest in the transformation component, bringing not only the productive vision, but also the use of what has been the surplus of the production of this chain as a whole, foreseeing, with the new spaces, greater options with regard to the work carried out so far by the farmers' field schools of Funda and Calumbo.

'We want the cooperatives not only to think about producing, but that production can also be transformed, for better use and diversification of goods,' he said, indicating that during the past year, more than 250 young people, of both sexes, have been trained at the level of the two schools.

Peasants learn, among others, techniques on how to cultivate, fertilize, diversify crops, knowledge regarding the sale of products, compliance with the agricultural calendar, as well as issues related to health and basic sanitation.

Field schools are a platform to promote the improvement of family farming and food security by combining local wisdom with the best available farming practices.

They also appear as spaces for food systems transformation, social empowerment and economic growth for communities. ASS/VC/DOJ
