Huambo - The governor of the province of Huambo, Pereira Alfredo, on Sunday requested the engagement of churches in cholera prevention actions in communities, such as drinking treated water, washing hands with soap and cleaning yards.
The governor, who was speaking during a worship service at the Evangelical Synodal Church in Angola (IESA) in Huambo, said that the church has always been concerned with taking care of the well-being of the believers, not only preaching the word of God, but also in social awareness work, so that the disease does not spread.
He recalled that cholera is the result of the garbage produced by citizens, hence the need to appeal to prevention in the first place, with measures that are within everyone's reach, without waiting for the government's guidance, from cleaning around houses, washing the food properly and not defecating in the open.
'If the government has the mission of plugging the holes in the roads, the churches have the responsibility to plug the holes in the minds, involving their members in social welfare initiatives, to avoid the evils that persist in everyday life,' he said.
Pereira Alfredo acknowledged that IESA, since its foundation in 1897, has always been dedicated to the education of citizens, training them in matters of literacy and beyond, to face the challenges of life and set a good example in society.
Therefore, he asked for them to carry out surveillance work in the communities to contain the evils of the vandalization of cables and electricity poles in the province of Huambo, which is forcing the government to repeat public investments.
In turn, the regional secretary of the IESA synod in Huambo, Pastor José Florino, said that all the church's temples have opened a space for prevention and awareness of the faithful about cholera, an extensive action in their respective neighborhoods.
He indicated that the church is betting on family farming projects, from the cultivation of corn, beans, soybeans, avocados, lemons and mangoes, to fight hunger and poverty of its members and their families.
He pointed out that they are also carrying out literacy actions for members and other citizens in the communities, having already taught more than 200 people to read and write in the province of Huambo.
IESA, implemented in the province of Huambo since 2003, has in this region of the Central Plateau more than five thousand faithful, who worship in 200 temples in the 17 municipalities.
With national and international coverage, IESA was founded on November 30, 1897, in the municipality of Caluquembe, province of Huíla, and is recognized by the Angolan State under executive decree No. 9/87, of January 24, 1987 and 17/03 of February 25, 2003. ZZN/JSV/ALH/DOJ
