Luanda – José Filomeno de Sousa dos Santos “Zenu”, son of former President José Eduardo dos Santos, is among the first inmates that were set free this Wednesday, in Angola, following the end of the year Presidential Pardon.
The first 28 inmates are part of a total of 51 pardoned convicts, who benefited from the presidential pardon decreed by in the ambit of the season festivity and the start of the celebrations of the country’s 50 Years of Independence.
Zenu dos Santos was serving a five-year sentence, after being convicted in August 2019 in the case that involved the swindling of 500 million US dollars which happened during his term as chairman of the Angolan Sovereign Fund.
In the same process, dubbed “BNA Case” (BNA- Central Bank), Zenu dos Santos was in trial with the former governor of the BNA, Valter Filipe, and received a sentence of 8 years imprisonment.
The presidential decree explains that the pardon had into account the good behaviour and lack of peril in releasing the prisoners covered by the presidential decree.
The process is to continue until 06 January, 2025.
