Luanda - Angolan diplomat Makiese Kinkela Augusto was elected Wednesday at the United Nations headquarters in New York as a member of the Joint Inspection Unit of the United Nations System (JIU) for the period 2026 to 2030.
According to a note sent to ANGOP, Makiese Augusto competed with Eritrea for the seat destined for African states, obtaining 120 votes, against 70 for his opponent.
In addition to Angola, candidates from Spain, Moldova and Switzerland were also elected.
According to the inspector-elect, this election represents a victory for Angolan diplomacy at international level, especially at the United Nations, and marks the culmination of several years of diplomatic action to bring Angolan staff into the United Nations system”.
For Angola's permanent representative to the United Nations, Francisco José da Cruz, the election of the Angolan candidate is the result of an intense diplomatic campaign and is part of the strategy of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, to include Angolan staff in international organizations.
Makiese Augusto is a senior diplomat with more than two decades of experience and extensive knowledge of administrative, financial and budgetary issues, as a result of her work as a member of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) for six years.
He also served on the staff of the United Nations Secretariat as a senior advisor to the President of the Human Rights Council and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva from 2012 to 2015.
He has a postgraduate degree in Management and Leadership and is fluent in Portuguese, French, Spanish and English.
Diplomat Makiese Augusto is the first Angolan to be elected a member of the United Nations Joint Inspection Unit since its creation in 1976.
The JIU is the only independent external oversight body of the United Nations system mandated to carry out evaluations, inspections and investigations throughout the system.
The Unit is made up of 11 Inspectors, according to the geographical distribution of UN member states.
Its mission is to analyze cross-cutting issues and act as an agent of change throughout the United Nations system.
It works to ensure management and administrative efficiency and to promote greater coordination both between UN agencies and with other internal and external oversight bodies.
Over the past 50 years, the Unit has dedicated itself to assisting the legislative bodies of numerous UN organizations in fulfilling their governance responsibilities.
The JIU provides support in the context of the oversight function of these agencies in relation to human, financial and other resources. ART/TED/AMP
