Abu Dhabi - Angola will spend USD 1 billion on the construction of parks for production and distribution of solar power, next year, in some provinces of the country, said the minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges.
The incumbent minister announced this on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), during the working visit of the president João Lourenço to that country.
The minister said that it is an investment by the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE),
João Baptista Borges added that the investment will be implemented in the country’s eastern region, with stress to the provinces of Moxico, Lunda Sul and Lunda Norte.
He said that the goal of his ministry is to expand the electricity, mainly in the country’s inland, to benefit more than 15 million citizens.
As part of President João Lourenço's visit, the governments of Angola and the United Arab Emirates signed, on Monday, a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the energy sector.
The agreement, which involves Masdar (Abu Dhabi Energy Company) and the Angolan Ministry of Energy and Water, establishes the implementation of a programme for the production of solar energy and its conservation.
Data from 2019 indicate that Angola has a production capacity of 14 megawatts of solar energy, installed in rural areas in the provinces of Bié, Cuando Cubango, Zaire, Lunda Sul, Moxico, Lunda Norte, Cunene, Huíla and Cuanza Sul.
