Luanda - The secretary of State for Energy, Arlindo Carlos, highlighted on Sunday, Jan 12, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Angola's commitment to renewable energy and combating the effects of climate change in the sector.
The official was speaking at the 15th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), held on the 12th and 13th of this month, in this Middle Eastern country, highlighting the need for a fair and balanced energy transition.
He assured that Angola approaches the energy transition not only as a response to climate challenges, but also as a path to economic growth that contributes to the formation of technical skills and poverty reduction.
The meeting took place under the theme “Accelerating the transition to renewable energy - the way forward”, with discussions focusing on strategies to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030, supporting transitions in emerging economies and promoting innovative financial flows in countries in need.
According to a note sent to ANGOP on Monday, the Angolan delegation also included the ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Júlio Maiato.
The more than 1,400 delegates, from 170 countries, also discussed the contribution and importance of renewable energy in the energy matrices of member countries and beyond.
Parallel to the 15th IRENA assembly, Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is being held, running until the 18th of this month, with the participation of various individuals, including high-level delegates and experts, to accelerate efforts to sustainability in the world.
It should be noted that Angola took over, in the last 12 months, the IRENA's vice-presidency, representing the group of African countries, and should be replaced by Namibia.
The presidency is currently held by Slovenia.
