France - Athletes taking part in the Paralympic Games, which begin on Thursday in Paris (France), have been banned from using Olympic ring tattoos.

Tattoos are classified as advertising, so during the competition, which ends on September 9, athletes will have to live with this unprecedented rule.

According to a communication from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), displaying a tattoo with the Olympic rings can lead to the athlete's disqualification and the consequent loss of a medal, should they have won one.

The decision is due to the fact that the IPC operates as a separate organization from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the two bodies therefore have different emblems.MC/ADR/AMP
