Porto Amboim - The Minister of State for Social Affairs, Maria do Rosário Bragança, on Monday in the city of Porto Amboim, Cuanza-Sul province, called for joint work for the preservation of sea turtles and Angolan biodiversity.
The Minister was speaking to the press after the release of 250 sea turtle hatchlings, held on Rio Longa beach.
She said that the Government will continue to support initiatives aimed at preserving biodiversity, within the framework of its policy.
She said that despite the effort of the Kitabanga project, sea turtles have decreased considerably in the country.
The Minister of State emphasized that the project values the effort that the entire community has made to preserve biodiversity, particularly sea turtles.
She pointed out as the cause of death of this species the disposal of waste in inappropriate places and improperly, as well as fishing in areas that are not allowed.
Kitabanga is a project for the study and conservation of sea turtles designed and implemented since 2003 by the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Agostinho Neto University in partnership with the Kissama Foundation and more recently with the University of Namibe.
The initiative has the consent of the Ministry of the Environment.
The ceremony was attended by the ministers of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho, and Education, Luísa Grilo, as well as the provincial governor of Cuanza-Sul, Narciso Benedito, among other entities. SJ/OHA/DOJ
