Matala – The Rwanda Company Unifood has said it intends to increase, in 2025, the tobacco harvest from 25 tons to 3,000 tons/year, on its farm located in the commune of Micosse, in Huíla.
According to the company's director, Gilberto Kohn, the farm currently produces 25% of the group's needs.
Despite the “little” cultivation, he admitted that the company is still the largest tobacco producer in the region, with a workforce of 724 employees, who work in an area of 180 hectares, out of the total of 4,000 workers.
In addition to the tobacco destined for the Lubango cigarette factory, the company with Rwandan capital also produces corn, beans and soybeans on the same surface.
Since 2016, Unifood has invested more than 40 million US dollars for the installation of the tobacco farm and processing area.
Matala municipality is located 180 kilometers east of Lubango city, it has a territorial area of 9,000 square kilometers and a population estimated at more than 360,000 inhabitants.
