Ndalatando - The Penitentiary Service is working on creating conditions for the construction of the country's first maximum security prison, to house dangerous criminals, the institution's spokesman, Menezes Cassoma said Wednesday in Ndalatando, Cuanza Norte province.
Menezes Cassoma said this on the sidelines of a 24-hour visit that the director general of the Penitentiary Service, Bernardo do Amaral Gourgel, is making to Cuanza Norte, with the aim of assessing the operation level of local structures in the sector.
According to that prison official, the country currently has no maximum security jail establishment.
He said that the future maximum security prison would be built in the province of Cuanza Norte, where since last month assessment work has been carried out on the site where the prison will be built.
The establishment will have capacity to house 1,500 prisoners, with wings for open and semi-open regime prisoners, but priority will be given to the closed regime.
In parallel to this prison, other wings will also be built to decongest the only penitentiary unit in Cuanza Norte, designed for 226 prisoners and which currently houses 529 prisoners, 303 more than its installed capacity.
