Luanda - The Azancot de Menezes Maternal and Child Hospital is holding a free obstetric fistula surgery campaign in central Bié province since Monday.
The information was given to ANGOP by the director of the Azancot de Menezes Maternal and Child Hospital, Manuela Mendes, who revealed that the campaign will cover 100 women from various provinces of the country over a period of 10 days.
According to the doctor, the process of registering women suffering from this pathology was carried out by a team of specialists who worked in different communities across the country.
‘Generally, these women don't come forward and remain isolated or outside their families. That's why an active search was carried out to locate and register them,’ she explained.
Director Manuela also urged women suffering from this injury to seek treatment at the Lucrécia Paim Maternity Hospital and the Anzacote de Menezes Hospital, where they will be registered and, when the time comes, operated on.
The campaign will involve five doctors, three of whom are nationals and two from Canada.
Obstetric fistula is characterised by a rupture or injury to the vaginal canal, causing urinary incontinence and, subsequently, the woman's social exclusion. Among other things, it causes prolonged and obstructed labour. EVC/OHA/DAN/DOJ
