Luanda - The general commander of the National Police (PN), Arnaldo Carlos, said Thursday in New York that violence at various points poses a threat to sustainability and peace and risks the progress made so far in the world.
According to a press release, the high ranking police officer, who was speaking at the 4th United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS), said the UNCOPS remains a fundamental instrument to promote the maintenance of global peace and security.
Arnaldo Castro explained that UNCOPS is active in conflict, post-conflict and other crisis situations, providing support to member states in protecting the civilian population and maintaining public order and security.
The Police commander added that Angola recognizes the important role of police forces in peace operations to strengthen international peace and security, underlining that in 2022 the country carried out the first deployment of police personnel, including the female component, in the UN Peace Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
Arnaldo Carlos said Angola has played an important role in the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts in Africa, through diplomatic actions aimed at increasing its intervention and contribution to peace missions.
The Police Chief stressed that monitoring and preventive intervention are the main operational tools to avoid or prevent conflicts at an early stage, particularly in the regions of Central and Southern Africa where Angola’s cooperation activity is most visible.
Angola is committed to fighting common and transnational crime, as well as preventing violence caused by armed conflicts, the Police Chief said, having reiterated the country's commitment to deploy National Police personnel to peace and security missions and to find solutions that guarantee "the prevention of conflicts and violence and the consolidation of peace".
Meetings
On the sidelines of the Summit, Arnaldo Carlos held several meetings with counterparts and other entities linked to security and public order.
The meeting was used to exchange views on public security and to envisage cooperation in this area, as well as in the training of National Police officers.
The commander-general also met with the second commander-general of the Turkish police, with whom he discussed cooperation in public security matters and in the fight against various forms of organized crime.
Arnaldo Carlos also met with China's Deputy Minister of Public Security to discuss issues related to police cooperation. VIC/DAN/AMP
