Luanda - The National Assembly (parliament) on Friday will hear for about an hour the candidate nominated by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, to be governor of the National Bank of Angola (BNA), Manuel António Tiago Dias.
Current acting governor of the Central Bank, Manuel António Tiago Dias, is due to replace José de Lima Massano, who recently resigned from his position, after being appointed minister of State for Economic Coordination.
"Besides conferring democratic legitimacy on the appointment of the governor of the National Bank, the hearing makes it possible to assess the suitability, management capacity, technical skills and recognised experience in economics, law, accounting, banking, finance and management of the candidate," the National Assembly said in a statement.
During the parliamentary session, deputies may ask the candidate about the nature, functions, constitutional and legal powers attributed to the National Bank, as well as the impediments and ineligibilities legally required to hold the position.
Manuel António Tiago Dias holds a Master's degree in Economic Sciences from the University of Bordeaux, in France. He joined the BNA in 1997, where he held various positions until his appointment, in 2016, as deputy governor, a position he held until 2023, before being appointed to the recent position of interim governor of the central bank of Angola.
