Luanda - The United States of America on Friday acknowledged the victory of the MPLA party and President-elect João Lourenço in the 24 August elections.
In a statement published on the State Department´s website and signed by US State Secretary Antony Blinken, the US congratulates João Lourenço on “his election as Angola’s next president”.
Mr Blinken also writes “We look forward to working with him to strengthen the vital relationship between Angola and the United States”, further stressing that “We will continue to collaborate closely with the Angolan government and the Angolan people to promote our shared goals, as we work together to advance a more sustainable, secure, inclusive, and prosperous future”.
The head of US diplomacy greets the millions of Angolans who voted in these elections, who, by doing so, manifested their commitment to the strengthening of democracy.
He expressed his desire to work in partnership with Angola´s elected leaders towards the construction of a better tomorrow for Angolans and Americans.
According to the definitive results published by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) and validated by the Constitutional Court, MPLA and its candidate João Lourenço, won the general elections with 51,17%, gaining 124 MPs for the National Assembly.
This was the fifth election in Angola since 1992.
