Luanda - Issues of peaceful political transition after the announcement of the results of the 24 August polls in Angola was the focus on Tuesday of the meeting between the US ambassador to Angola, Tulinabo Mushingi, and the president of CASA-CE coalition, Manuel Fernandes.
Talking to the press, the candidate for President of the Republic, leader of the Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE), stated that the meeting of about one hour served to review the USA vision regarding the reforms underway in Angola.
Manuel Fernandes stressed that the occasion also served to reassure the North American diplomat about the post election period, thus eliminating any possibility of national instability.
Both officials assessed issues related to international relations and the coalition´s position in regard to the defence of national interest in the world arena.
The politician said that in case of winning the elections, CASA-CE at international level intends to implement good policies based on the reinforcement of the political relationship with African countries and with the USA.
When questioned on the current African political situation, Manuel Fernandes said that African leaders should implement real actions so that the continent stop being subordinated and become more independent economically, culturally, socially and politically.
Manuel Fernandes considered that up to now, despite some cases of intolerance, the electoral campaign is taking place in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity.
He added that CASA-CE has no difficulties in living together with other contestants in the election.
In this regard, CASA-CE promises to create the “Political Statute of the Opposition”, in the scope of its state reform plan.
Regarding the meeting that Manuel Fernandes had with the electorate of the provinces of Cuanza Norte, Malanje, Uíge, Bengo and Zaire, the politician considered it positive as he realises that the citizens have been paying attention to the current situation in the country.
CASA-CE, was created on 3 April 2012; it is participating in the election under the motto “Home, work and fair pay”. In its first participation, in 2012, it elected 8 deputies and five years later (in 2017) it managed to double the number of deputies.
The coalition is integrated by the Party of Free Alliance of Angolan Majority (PALMA), Support Party for Democracy and Development - Patriotic Alliance (PADDA-AP), Angolan Pacific Party (PPA), National Party for the Salvation of Angola (PNSA) and Democratic Party for the Progress of Angolan National Alliance (PDP-ANA).
For the 24 August elections, roughly 14.3 million voters are registered to vote, of which 22.560 are resident abroad. The overseas vote, the first in Angola´s history, will take place in 25 cities in 12 countries.
These are the fifth elections to be held in Angola, since 1992.
