Luanda - Angolan writer Jorge Arrimar is the winner of the 6th edition of the dstangola/Camões Literature Prize 2024, with the novel "Cuéle o Pássaro Troçador" (Cuéle the Swapping Bird), published in 2023 by the Guerra e Paz publishing company, the writer confirmed on Saturday, in Luanda.
Speaking to ANGOP, during the autograph session of the book, Jorge Arrimar said that the novel pays homage to the Southwest of Angola in the 19th and 20th centuries, due to its historical and cultural dimension and preservation of fauna.
The writer said that he took nine years to write the book and involves people with different languages and customs.
He said that the award, promoted by dstgroup in partnership with Camões Institute, received on the 7th of this month, is a demonstration and recognition of his work as a writer for 50 years.
For Jorge Arrimar, the 450 pages book with more than 1,000 copies will help readers to deepen their knowledge of the history of southwest Angola.
The dstangola/Camões Literature Award, which distinguishes books published in poetry and prose by Angolan authors, has the mission of becoming a reference in Angola, by distinguishing the most prestigious works and authors, with the utmost rigor in choosing the winning work, with writers João Melo, Boa Ventura Cardoso, Pepetela and Jorge Arrimar are part of the list of winners.
Jorge Manuel de Abreu Arrimar, born in 1953, in Chibia (Huíla). He studied at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Luanda, having completed a degree in History and specializing in Documentary Sciences.
He has more than ten books, among them "Rotaa Circulares (April 2017)", "Confluências (1997), in partnership with Manuel Yao", "Secretos Sinais (1992)", "Fonte do Lilau (1990)", "Murilaonde (1990)", "20 Poemas de Savana (1981)", "Poemas (1979), in partnership with Eduardo B. Pinto)" and "Ovatylongo (1975)".
This year, the writer celebrates 50 years of literary activity, having published his first book in 1975, in Lubango, Huila province. MEL/QCB/MRA/DOJ
