Malanje - The cholera vaccination campaign kicked off, on Thursday (17), in the municipality of Cacuso (province of Malanje), aiming to stop the disease contamination chain that has already infected 472 people and killed 18 in the province.

The campaign, which has 62 vaccinators and will be extended to the three municipalities considered epicentres of the disease in the province, aims to immunize, during 5 days, 7k people in Cacuso, 8k in Pungo Andongo and Quéssua.

At the opening of the event, the deputy-governor for the Political, Economic and Social Sector, Franco Mufinda, reiterated the appeal to religious, administrative and traditional authorities to continue to raise awareness among the population about the dangers of the disease.

He explained that since the first case was reported last Jan, the number of infected people has continued to rise, with a daily average of 15 to 20 cases, hence the need for the population to join the campaign to block cholera.

He explained that the disease mainly affects men, whose ages range from 2 to 30.

He highlighted that the govt is carrying out work in the Muhunga de cima and de Baixo and Quizenga neighbourhoods (Cacuso municipality), which aims to build latrines to end open defecation and install small water systems, with a view to eradicating the disease.

The vaccine, once managed, lasts for 6 months to 2 years.

In the province, cholera affects the municipalities of Cacuso, Cangandala, Quéssua, Malanje and Pungo Andongo.
