Kampala - The Deputy Chairperson for the African Union Commission (AUC), Monique Nsanzabaganwa, said Friday in Kampala, Uganda, that the African continent needs the right investments and partnerships to achieve food security and become a global breadbasket.

Speaking at the joint ministerial meeting of foreign and agriculture ministers at the African Union Extraordinary Summit on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program, Monique Nsanzabaganwa called for the urgent implementation of the new CAADP Post-Malabo Strategy.

"The (African) continent is richly endowed with agricultural resources, with 60% of the world's uncultivated arable land, abundant water, diverse climates and a young and dynamic population," said Nsanzabaganwa.

The AUC Deputy Chairperson stressed that challenges such as limited funding, inadequate infrastructure, climate change and the slow adoption of modern technologies are hindering the continent's progress.

The official recalled that in February 2024, the AU Commission presented its fourth biennial review of CAADP, highlighting the fact that no member state is on track to meet the Malabo Declaration targets by 2025.

Monique Nsanzabaganwa said the heads of state directed the development of a new 10-year CAADP Strategy and Action Plan (2026-2035), reflecting the collective aspirations of Agenda 2063, to build resilient and sustainable agri-food systems capable of feeding 2.5 billion Africans by 2050.

The AUC official advocated the expansion of intra-African trade and the creation of millions of jobs for young people and women.HM/ASS/DAN/AMP
