Luanda – Angola will have over 900 megawatts of solar capacity and over 1,000 megawatts of battery storage capacity installed by 2027, with the aim to benefit at least 7 million people in eight provinces, the Energy and Water minister, João Baptista Borges, said Friday.
According to the minister, the provinces selected are Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, Moxico, Malanje, Cunene, Huila, Namibe and Bié.
João Baptista Borges disclosed the information at the opening of the Forum on Energy Transition in Angola, adding that the national energy transition process included broad reform of the regulatory and legal framework.
The same process, the minister said, is aimed at integrating policies promoting competitive prices and greater attractiveness to the private sector in the renewable energy market.
The minister also noted the country's position amongst Africa's main oil producing nations, "having oil reserves estimated at 9 trillion barrels and gas reserves estimated at 11 trillion cubic feet”.
The minister added that in the solar energy field, Angola's geographical location provided the country with solar energy potential, with excellent intensity and regularity.
The forum promoted by the Expansão newspaper, aimed to outline paths, suggest policy measures and actions to ensure the country's industrialisation. AC/Amp/jmc
