Luanda - The Francophone parliamentary community welcomed Angola's accession as a full member of the Association of Francophonie Parliaments on Tuesday, during the conference of speakers held in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.
The Angolan parliamentary delegation, which is participating for the first time in the 16th Conference of Parliament Speakers and the African Region Section of the Association of Francophonie Parliaments as a full member, received a standing ovation from the speakers of the organisation's parliaments.
The Francophone parliamentary community praised the accession of the National Assembly of Angola, which with its vitality and demonstrated evidence as a strong institution and pillar of democracy, will be an asset to the Francophone parliamentary community.
The Angolan Parliament was admitted in July 2024, in Montreal, Canada, as a full member of the Association of Parliaments of the Francophonie, during the organization's 49th assembly.
This process began in 2023, when Carolina Cerqueira participated in the assembly held in Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire.
The Assembly of the Francophonie is an interparliamentary organization made up of 90 sections formed by parliaments and interparliamentary organizations that share the French language and act as a consultative assembly of the Francophonie.
The organization's objectives are to represent the interests and aspirations of the peoples of the French-speaking community with the Francophonie, to promote democracy, the rule of law and human rights, especially within the Francophonie community, to bring a political perspective to the Francophonie authorities and to convey opinions in agreement with the Francophonie authorities.
The organization's objectives also include promoting cooperation and strengthening solidarity within the Francophonie community, respecting the right to development, to disseminate and promote the international role of parliamentarians, to contribute to the development and mutual knowledge of the cultures and civilizations of peoples who regularly use the French language, and to contribute to the influence of the French language.
The Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie has 88 member states and governments, of which 54 are full members, seven associate members and 27 observer members.
The organization was created in 1970 and its motto is “equality, complementarity and solidarity” and focuses its activities on programs such as freedom, democracy and development, culture, communication, knowledge, progress and the economy.
With a population of 890 million people, of which 274 million are French-speaking and mostly from Africa, the organization implements political and multilateral cooperation actions for the benefit of the population of its member countries.
