Luanda – The Chairman of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, arrived Tuesday in Luanda for a 24 hour working visit.
He was received by the Angolan Foreign minister, Téte António, upon his arrival at 4 de Fevereiro International Airport.
Mahamoud Ali Youssouf’s visit is part of the institutional coordination initiatives with the leadership of the African Union (AU), which is currently led by the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço.
According to the program, he will participate in a presentation session, where he will be formally introduced as the new leader of the African Union Commission.
The same event also includes the presentation of the work program of the Angolan presidency in this continental organization, as well as an update on the African Union Development Agency - New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) Program, by the institution’s Executive Director, Ms Nardos Bekele-Thomas.
Mahmoud Ali Youssouf took office on 13 March this year, in a ceremony held at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, and presided over by the President of the African Union, João Lourenço.
In the electoral process, he won after obtaining 33 votes, which guaranteed the two-thirds majority required by the organization's rules. Raila Odinga, former Kenyan Prime Minister, and Richard Randriamandrato, former Foreign Minister of Madagascar, also ran for the position.
Born September 2, 1965, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf is a career diplomat and former Foreign Minister of Djibouti.
