Luanda - The Minister of Interior, Manuel Homem,on Friday in Luanda hilighted the need for firefighters of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) to unite in order to face adversity more effectively and with greater determination.
Speaking at the opening of the 7th General Assembly of the Union of Firefighters of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (UBPLP), the minister said that through the permanent exchange of knowledge, innovation and continuous training, the performance of the firefighters will be raised to a better and exemplary level.
According to Manuel Homem, the role of firefighters has become increasingly vital and indispensable in today's communities.
‘We bravely and unwaveringly face the challenges posed by natural disasters, devastating fires, public health crises and so many other emergencies that demand our immediate attention and professionalism,’ the minister said.
The minister drew attention to the differences between countries in terms of staff training, available equipment and infrastructure, emphasising that these obstacles must be overcome with wisdom and joint effort.
‘It is our duty, as brothers in uniform, to work closely together to ensure that all firefighters have access to the resources and training they need to fulfil their role safely, effectively and with dignity,’ Manuel Homen said.
The minister said he expects the 7th Assembly of the UBPLP to be the start of an era of effective collaboration and mutual commitment, where stronger bonds could be created and firefighters be made aware of their responsibility, ready to face the challenges of the future and always willing to put their neighbour's life first.
During the one-day meeting, the participants addressed, the countries' proposal for a punctual revision of the Protocol of Constitution of the UBPLP and the indicative programme for cooperation in civil protection and firefighters in the CPLP countries, among other issues.
The UBPLP is an international organisation set up on the initiative of the League of Portuguese Firefighters and its counterparts, with the aim of promoting scientific and educational cooperation between the nations that make up the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries.
Its statutes provide, among other things, collaboration in preventing and fighting fires, rescuing people and providing assistance in accidents or natural disasters.CPM/MCN/DAN/AMP
