Luanda - The National Assembly has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to defending peace, constitutional stability and social inclusion, aiming for the sustainable development of Angola.
The statement was made by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, when she spoke, on Thursday, in Luanda, at the closing ceremony of the II Legislative Session of the V Legislature.
For Carolina Cerqueira, the Members of the Parliament (MP) will continue to defend quality education, healthcare for all, and promoting the rights of the most vulnerable, taking into account the permanent strengthening of Democracy and Human Rights.
Carolina Cerqueira pointed out the defense of interests, rights and the promotion of women, in all areas, as a constant priority for AN.
'We have also focused on defending and protecting children's rights, through legislative prevention and education initiatives', she said.
She explained that since the beginning of the legislature the need to increase penalties for crimes of violence, whether physical, sexual or of any other nature, was identified.
She praised the Executive's efforts to carry out public consultations in the country's 18 provinces, in order to obtain answers and identify the causes of crimes, to combat and prevent consequences.
On the other hand, it revealed that environmental issues, increasingly urgent, are now approached from the perspective of human rights.
She reinforced that inclusion in the Tenth Parliamentary Committee proves AN's commitment to dealing with these issues and climate change globally.
She considered that the Angolan parliament is aware of the unpredictable consequences if it does not end the climate crisis.
Future
Regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI), she asked legislators to reflect on its growing impact on societies, as well as the power of new technologies that can be integrated responsibly into public policies.
'These issues are real challenges that we need to face to ensure that the technological revolution benefits everyone, without leaving anyone behind', she informed.
Internally, the president of the AN clarified that the mechanisms for bringing local office services together have been reinforced, to improve monitoring of the most critical issues.
We continue, she said, to invest in the human capital of the National Assembly through a set of technical training actions for parliamentary employees and agents.
The second year of the V legislature, which ended this Thursday, was marked by the holding in Angola of the 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, in October 2023.
The Legislature comprises five legislative sessions or parliamentary years, starting on October 15th and lasting one year, without prejudice to the intervals provided for by law.
The effective period of operation of the National Assembly is 10 months and ends on August 15 of the following year.
Outside the period of effective operation (August 15th to October 15th), the AN may operate extraordinarily by deliberation of the Plenary, by convening of the Permanent Committee or, due to its impossibility, and in case of emergency, on the initiative of more than half of the MPs in office.
