Luanda – The secretary of State for Mineral Resources, Jânio Correa Victor, on Tuesday in Luanda reiterated the need to attract more investments to the multiple value chains of the mining sector, aiming to increase its weight in the Angolan Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Speaking to the press, on the sidelines of the lecture on "The History of the Mining Worker in the 50 Years of National Independence", he stressed that since 2017, the attraction of new investors has made it possible to relaunch the mining industry in the country.

For example, he highlighted the return to the country of large companies in the sector, such as Rio Tinto, which is operating in the sector in the prospecting phase.

"We have many important mining projects in operation, which will allow for the creation of more direct and indirect jobs. For example, to date, the diamond sector has approximately 25,000 direct jobs, in addition to indirect jobs," he highlighted.

He mentioned that, currently there are a number of new projects that will come into operation, to contribute to the growth and development of the mining sector.

In turn, the director of the Information Technology and Institutional Communications Office of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Luciano Canhanga, considers the mining sector to be one of the basic pillars of the economy, with a direct impact on the creation of wealth, generation of revenue and diversification of the national production base.

Regarding the Mining Workers' Day celebrations, to be marked on the 27th of this month, the official stated that the Angolan Government recognizes and values the efforts of all professionals in the sector, who overcome difficulties every day and make mining a strategic activity for the sustainable development of the country.

The celebrations taking place under the motto “Responsible Mining, a Bright Future”, he said that this content reflects the collective commitment to an increasingly sustainable, transparent and external mining activity for the development of communities and future generations.

"We are currently experiencing a context characterized by excess production and the consequent drop in the prices of mining commodities. This reality brings significant challenges to our sector, requiring greater commitment from all of us. It is essential that mining workers maintain their determination and professionalism, actively contributing to the investment and modernization of extractive activities," he highlighted.

MIRAMPET's celebrations for Angolan Mining Workers' Day will take place from the 15th to the 27th of this month, and will serve to highlight the strategic importance of the mineral resources sector in the scope of the country's economic and social development.

However, during the current year, technical-scientific, sporting, cultural and recreational activities involving entities linked to the sector will take place in different provinces of the country.
