Luanda - The International Congo-Oubangui-Sangha Basin Commission (CICOS) delivered Wednesday radio communication equipment and waste management material to the Maritime and Port Institute of Angola (IMPA) to facilitate river navigation in the regional integration space.
The initiative is part of "Support for Regulation, Facilitation, Security and Sustainability of the River Transport in the CICOS Space" project, with support of the European Union estimated at Euro 2 million.
CICOS’s Secretary General, Judith Agbor, who delivered the funds, said the initiative will enable to mitigate various difficulties faced in river navigation in the Congo River Basin corridor, with stress to socio-economic and environmental aspects for the member states.
In turn, the Secretary of State for the Civil Aviation, Maritime and Port sectors, Carlos Borges, highlighted the objectives of CICOS.
He stressed the creation of a corridor of development and integration of Central Africa, reduction of pollution in the port platforms and waterways of the member states for a safe navigation in the river.
With headquarters in Kinshasa, CICOS was created in 1999 by the Heads of State and Government of Angola, Cameroon, Gabon, Central African Republic (CAR), Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Republic of Congo.
