Luanda - The Peace and Security Council (CPS) of the African Union (AU) on Friday concluded a four-day Field Mission to Egypt and Sudan, with the highlight being on a meeting with the Sudanese Transitional President, Abdel Fattah-al-Burhan.
During the trip to Port Sudan, the current headquarters of the Sudanese Government, representatives of the 15 members of the AU CPS, of which Angola is a part, consulted with civil society organizations and leaders of opposition parties, promoting a constructive approach to the transition process in that country, with a view to restoring peace, security, stability and prosperity, through dialogue, reconciliation and inclusive development.
They learned about the political, humanitarian, social and economic, security and human rights situation in Sudan, where a political-military conflict prevails between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), causing the exodus of around 7 million civilians to neighboring countries.
In the Egyptian capital, Cairo, the CPS conveyed its solidarity to the People and Government of Egypt, as it is one of the countries most affected by the conflicts in neighbouring states, hosting around one and a half million Sudanese refugees since the resumption of the conflict in neighbouring Sudan.
Still in Egypt, the country that presides over the PSC this October, the mission held a working meeting with the minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, held a meeting on the link between peace, security and development in Africa and visited the facilities the Police Academy and the Training Center for Peacekeeping Operations.
They also held consultations with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LEA), an organization based in Cairo, and concluded that it was essential to promote a common agenda with the African Union to respond to various peace and security challenges, especially the conflicts in Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Palestine.
The Peace and Security Council (CPS) Field Mission of the African Union (AU) precedes the first Meeting of the Ad-hoc Presidential Committee on the Republic of Sudan, to be held on the 23rd of this month, in Kampala, under the chairmanship of the Ugandan Head of State, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The Angolan Head of State, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, is a member of the mentioned committee.
