Luanda - Angola Head of State João Lourenço said Tuesday in Luanda that the current international landscape is complex, given the conflicts in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Sudan and in other regions of the African continent.
For João Lourenço, who was speaking at the opening of talks between the Angolan and Portuguese delegations, these disputes involve dangers that require everyone to take a realistic and pragmatic view of the ways to put an end to them.
The perspective, Lourenço said, of a world of peace, concord and understanding between nations is the pillar on which efforts must be based to resolve the major problems that exist, so that convergent action can be taken to defeat wars.
João Lourenço said that wars, terrorism and violent extremism, climate change and its consequences, epidemics, hunger and poverty and other evils constitute a serious threat to human survival.
Ukraine and the Middle East
On the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East, João Lourenço stressed that the value and powerful force of dialogue should always prevail, on the basis of the international rules that govern coexistence between peoples.
Lourenço called for a definitive end to the war against Ukraine, the occupation and annexation of parts of its territory, and for ways to be found to build lasting peace in Europe.
The president stressed that the attacks of October 7 against defenseless Israeli citizens, condemned by the international community, cannot justify the disproportionate and inhumane action against the lives of a large number of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip and beyond, most of them old, sick and defenseless children.
“This should merit the condemnation and repudiation of the international community in the strongest terms and demand the implementation of the United Nations Security Council resolutions that point to the creation of the State of Palestine in a solution of two neighboring sovereign states living side by side peacefully,” Lourenço said.
Portugal’s Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, who arrived Monday in Angola, highlighted the role of President João Lourenço in mediating various prevailing conflicts in Africa, especially in the east of the DRC and in Sudan.
Montenegro said that in international cooperation, at the level of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) and the United Nations, the position of Angola and Portugal has been the same, taking into account the achievement of peace through dialogue and on the basis of UN resolutions.
The visit
The Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, began a three-day official visit to Angola on Tuesday, with a view to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
As part of his agenda, on Wednesday the Portuguese Prime Minister will take part in an Angola-Portugal business forum as part of the Luanda International Fair (FILDA), and a trip to Benguela province to see the Lobito Corridor project of his visit, which ends on Thursday.VIC/AMP
