Luanda - The republics of Angola and Algeria signed a Memorandum on Political Consultations on Wednesday in Luanda as part of the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.

It is a Memorandum that replaces the one signed in 2004, as it is intended to diversify and raise the level of bilateral cooperation, as well as to increase collaboration on issues of common interest, at the level of international organizations.

The document was signed, on the Angolan side, by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, and by Algeria, the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in charge of African Affairs, Selma Bakhta Mansouri.

During the meeting, the two entities stressed the importance of increasing cooperation in areas such as Tourism, Agriculture, Energy, Higher Education, among others.

On the occasion, the Algerian official stressed that her country will strengthen the granting of scholarships for Angolan students.

On the occasion, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, referred to Angola's interest in strengthening ties of friendship and political-diplomatic cooperation with Algeria, formalized on 15 April 1983.

He took the opportunity to recall that both sides have a record of good visits, which has served as a milestone for boosting political, economic and trade cooperation, resulting in the signing of 13 legal instruments

Esmeralda Mendonça also said that Angola has followed the role played by Algeria as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2004-2005 biennium and welcomed the election as a member of the Council Peace and Security Authority of the African Union (AU) for the period 2025-2028.

'From this perspective, we believe that there are also matters that deserve a more in-depth approach on our part, considering the fact that President João Lourenço is the African Union Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa and the President of the Algerian Republic, Abdelmajid Tebboune, is the champion of the continental organization for Combating Terrorism and Violent Extremism',  told.

He stressed that, taking into account the opportunities that the two countries present in economic terms, it will be advantageous to develop efforts to promote the Exchange of Experience between Angolan and Algerian businessmen and, to this end, underlined the establishment of a Bilateral Commission to ensure greater impetus for this goal.

He emphasized that Angola wants to continue to rely on Algeria's experience to accelerate the process of economic diversification in the most varied areas.

On the other hand, the Algerian official, Selma Bakhta Mansouri, expressed her country's interest in developing concrete partnerships with Angola in important sectors.  especially energy, mining, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, air transport and tourism.

'The potential is enormous between the two countries and the economies offer promising prospects for mutual development', he emphasized.

According to the diplomat, the Algerian Republic reinforces its solidarity with the Angolan people in the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Angola's independence, a historic milestone that honors the African continent. FMA/SC/DOJ
