Luanda - Angola needs 75 million US dollars to help the more than 8 percent of the population in the south of the country, affected by drought and floods, announced this Wednesday, in Luanda, the World Bank (WB) financial sector specialist for disaster risk and climate issues, Qhelile Ndlovu.
The official, who was speaking during the presentation of the diagnosis 'Financial protection against disasters in Angola', highlighted that drought affects 8% of the population concentrated in the southern region of the country, while floods caused by rain are below this percentage, despite occurring more frequently.
According to Qhelile Ndlovu, financial protection against disasters and crises consists of advance planning, aiming to prevent natural phenomena.
She recalled that, currently, Angola depends heavily on reallocating budgets to deal with natural disasters, a fact that has a negative impact on the long-term plan.
For her part, the Secretary of State for Budget and Public Investment, Juciene de Sousa, said that the Angolan Government has been working to prevent and respond to the challenges that these crises present to the country.
She pointed to the programs of 'Risk Prevention and Environmental Protection', 'Climate Change and Biodiversity Protection', 'Management of Chemical Substances and Environmental Education' as possible solutions to overcome the challenges posed by climate crises.
in this regard, the deputy commander of the Civil Protection and Fire Service, Manuel Lutango, considered it crucial to explore partnerships with sectors and non-governmental organizations, to guarantee a diversity of financial resources intended for protection against disasters.
However, the official defended the need for greater transparency and accountability in the management of funds allocated for this purpose, with a view to ensuring that resources are used efficiently and effectively, maximizing their impact on the protection of vulnerable communities.
Essentially, the presentation of Financial Protection against Disasters in Angola, which included a reflection panel composed of representatives from the Ministries of Finance and Home Affairs, aimed to assess the degree of results and recommendations of this program, in a promotion of the Word Bank, in partnership with the Angolan Government.
