Caxito - The government of the province of Bengo banned the use of plastic bags in bakeries, through a notice from the Provincial Office of the Environment, Waste Management and Community Services, launched Tuesday, with a view to combating harmful effects on nature.
The notice is in accordance with Presidential Decree nº 190/12 of August 24th, Regulation on Waste Management, in conjunction with Presidential Order nº 289/22, of December 30th.
The measure, which will be extended to markets, warehouses and other commercial establishments, aims to encourage the use of fabric bags, promoting a source of family income.
When speaking at the ceremony launching the notice, the governor of Bengo, Maria Nelumba, highlighted that the retention of garbage in drainage ditches, the main cause of numerous floods in rainy weather, is caused by the high quantity of plastic bags exposed to the environment.
She said that the proliferation of plastic bags contributes to constraints on basic sanitation, hence the implementation of the measure in Bengo.
In turn, the provincial director for Environment, Waste Management and Community Services, Janice Muanamalongo, informed that the launch of the notice also marks the end of the awareness phase that began in May 2023.
She warned that, from now on, “the sale of plastic bags next to bakeries is prohibited, at the risk of sellers being fined in accordance with the Administrative Offenses Law”.
